We were given a choke chain, and I'm wary of it. Should I try it out?

I've had a choke chain on my puppy since he was 4 months old. It is the prong type for training German Shepherd and other big dogs. He is great with it. He learned in literally minutes not to pull. He does know the difference between his collars. If he has a regular one on he will still pull, but not with the choke chain. He is 6 months now and very well behaved when wearing it.
