Scarlet Letter Theme help?

One of the themes in The Scarlet Letter is Smart people dont always do the smartest things for themselves. According to my resources.. it says this on pg 26. However i'm having trouble seeing where. like who it involves and the scenario. Please help me i have to write a paper.
